In my first blog post, I want to consider the use of social media both in your lives and in the classroom. The use of some types of social media, like email, the internet, and even blogs and wikis, has become prevalent in classrooms at all age levels around the world. More recent trends indicate an increased use of other social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, and cell phones.
In order to gauge where the use of social media fits into your life, I would like you to post a comment answering the following questions:
1. Do you contribute regularly to a blog or wiki?
2. Do you have a Facebook account?
3. Do you have a Twitter account?
4. If you are a consumer of social media, which vehicle do you use more frequently to access the social media tools you use - your computer or your cell phone?
5. Of all the social media tools you utilize, which one would you miss the most if your access to it was shut down? What would you miss?
6. Of all the social media tools you utilize, which one do you see having the most potential as a tool to strengthen, deepen, and make more meaningful the learning that already happens in your classes and in your school? How/why?

1. I sometimes contribute to a blog or wiki.
2. I have a facebook account so I could meet people and to keep in touch with them.

4. I use my computer and cell phone pretty much the same, but now I use my computer more.
5. I would miss my laptop the most because there is so much to do on my laptop and it is so important for MICDS.
6. I would say the computer if you need to learn more about something you didn't know you use the computer to search the topic and you can learn more about topic.
7. An ipod. The ipod is only used to listen to music and it doesn't help with anything else like finding information.

5.I would miss facebook the most because it's a great way to share pictures and talk to your friends when they're not sitting beside you.
6.I think that skype would be the most helpful tool for students because by video chatting your teacher you can meet with them and ask them questions while able to see them.
7.I think that facebook would be the least helpful because a student could get destracted with all the apps that the site provides.

6. My laptop has the most potential as a tool to strengthen learning because you can find everything on the internet about any topic in the world.
7. Twitter has the least potential because most people only use it to keep track of family members or celebrities.

My computer. I don't have a cell phone.

I would miss facebook, or the internet in general the most.

Blogs and wikis, because they are collaboration based.

Facebook, because it's used as recreational socializing and almost never for academic purposes. It's built around fun, not school work.

4. I use my computer. the only thing I use my phone for is communication.
5. I would miss the internet in general because I've become so accustomed to having it.
6. Blogs because they're basically like writing assignments but they're organized on the internet and comments can be posted on them among other things.
7. Any website that a person can play games on. Those websites are obviously made for entertainment and possibly social connection but aren't good for school.

Yes but I never get on it. My friend made it for me but I never really got into twitter.

I definitely use my computer a lot more. My rarely use my cell phone because I have my house phone so I just use that. Plus I can't text which is also a pretty big reason.
5. Of all the social media tools you utilize, which one would you miss the most if your access to it was shut down? What would you miss?
I would miss my internet the most mainly because it's what I use to keep connected to friends and family. As well as for the reason that it is usually where I get all of my information regarding school from.
6. Of all the social media tools you utilize, which one do you see having the most potential as a tool to strengthen, deepen, and make more meaningful the learning that already happens in your classes and in your school? How/why?
Personally I think any kind of computer or laptop that has an internet connection. This is because it is very easy to contact people if you have questions or comments. Another reason being that there are various sites such as wiki and blogs that allow you to do a class project and everyone is able to contribute.
7. Of all the social media tools you utilize, which one do you see as having the least potential as a tool to strengthen, deepen, and make more meaningful the learning that already happens in your classes and in your school? How/why?
Facebook because it really isn't any real help when it comes to school related things & to be honest it can get very distracting.

4. I use my computer more frequently to access social media.
5. I would miss facebook because out of all the social media tools I use, I use facebook the most. I would miss instant chatting with friends and stalking people and their pictures.
6.Blogs and wikis because they can be worked on independently, or as a group.
7. Facebook and twitter because these tools are for socializing with friends, and not intended for academic purposes.

5. I would probably miss my cell phone the most because it is a lot more useful to me than my computer and i would miss texting the most.
6. I would say my computer beacuse it is the most useful tool I use in school and I am not that smart with them.

5. I would miss my computer the most if I could not access it. I would miss not knowing who commented on my Facebook wall, and not knowing the recent scoop about movies, books, and music artists (music I would miss the most). I would also miss not getting onto iTunes.
6. The best tool to strengthen the learning, for me, is to have a real textbook, and not one on the computer, because there are so many things that can distract me.
7. The worst tool to strengthen learning would be the cell phone, because you can’t access textbooks on it, and you can’t write papers on it either.

6. i think my computer would be the best. im not completly sure about social media tools as in websites, because i honestly think things like facebook bring us down and disract us more. but as a major tool i would say the laptops because we can do so much more with this technology.
7. i say facebook. i think it actually has anegative effect as in its more of a distraction from school work. on the other hand, it is an easy, fast way to communicate with friends.

-I use my cell phone more frequently to use txt messaging

-I would miss my computer the most because I not only use it for social networking but for many other things.

-My computer because you can do so much with it. This tool gives you access to many more tools such as websites, databases, libraries and much more.

-Twitter has the least potential because 99% of the things written on Twitter are superfluous comments. Twitter is like recording every word of a conversation. I think it is mainly a useless tool except for clebrities. They can use it to connect with fans or to increase their fanbase and market their work.

My computer, because I like to know what's going on with my friends and my family, mainly the ones I don't get to talk to on a daily basis. I'm the type of person who really savors relationships. I would also miss the ability to have "the world at my fingertips" if I want to know something.

Again, the computer, because it is such a huge source of information. If I don't understand something in class, I can usually use it to see the information from another perspective so it will click with me.

Probably my cell-phone, because it has no relation to academics, it's really just a device that connects you to family and friends. It has no information on it that you need to be educated.
